User Experience or UX can make or break your startup. As founders & entrepreneurs, it becomes really crucial to understand what it actually is, how it can impact your business & how to adopt it in your startup early.

Here’s a summary of a talk I gave to 100+ entrepreneurs and startup enthusiasts on the importance of UX in startups.

Ensuring market need

It’s not uncommon to wake up with a great idea that you believe can change the world or find a market full of opportunities. But without adequate market research, you might end up building something that the market will not welcome.

Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • What is the problem & how severe it is?
  • Who are the ones facing it?
  • What are the other solutions available in the market already?
  • How can you add value?

This will help you understand what value proposition your product needs to offer to position your startup in a relatively safe & thriving spot within the market.

Stop Assuming

It’s common to assume that your know your customers well & what you are building is exactly what they need. But often we’ve found that products solely builds on assumptions fail to meet the actual user’s needs & lose their effectiveness.

The best practice is to ask your users about their problems & then brainstorm a bunch of ideas that can potentially solve that problem. Conducting User Interviews, surveys, etc can help you find the one ideas that will best cater to the needs of your user.

This is essential before you start building your product or else you might end up with something that your users won’t appreciate.

Edge over competition

Who doesn’t love a great experience? How easy, frictionless, descriptive & delightful can you make that experience, really matters.

A good experience might go unnoticed but a bad experience will certainly become a painful memory for your users which will encourage them to explore your competitors.

The opposite is true as well. A good experience will help you build emotional bonds with your users which in turn will increase customer satisfaction & turn them into loyal users who will promote your product for free through word of mouth.

Helps build trust & credibility

The first impression is the last impression. The first thing the user will see is your UI. Interacting with an appealing UI can be a delightful experience for your users but it should not come with the cost of bad UX.

Visually appealing products showcase your attention to detail, your professionalism & how seriously you take your product. This signals users that they can trust you & creates a strong first impression.

Final Note

As competition increases, UX in startups becomes increasingly important. Investing in UX early has several benefits, and it pays off in the long run.
